Vinos Libre Yá

Yá Cuvée 23 Brut Reserva Cava Macabeo-Xarel-lo-Parellada 2020

Produced from the "mosto flor" ("free-run juice") of sustainably grown and hand-harvested grapes. Ya means "yes!" in Spain. Straw yellow with good flow of tiny bubbles and light mousse. Stone fruit aromas with a vanilla nut fragrance. On the palate peach and citrus flavors, good balance, plenty of acidity and lingers nicely. — 5 months ago

Château d'Yquem

Y Ygrec Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2020

Y stands for yes and this is indeed a good wine. Not my favorite year for the Ygrec and I will question the $145 I paid - probably closer to a $90 value for me. This is otherwise typical and refreshing but lacks some of the depth of the other vintages. Quite possible I opened it too early and it will evolve - still a few bottles left so we’ll see. — 2 years ago

The Language of Yes

En Passerillage Grenache 2020

I tried my first bottle of this several months ago, and since then it’s really settled down and blossomed. Light color, but the nose pops with perfumey cherry and raspberry, along with subtle notes of moist earth, spice, and sandalwood. In the mouth, it’s got intense flavors in a floaty carriage, with deep red fruit and lots of savory notes. Long finish, with a teensy bit of tannin. Alcohol in check, and enough acidity to keep the intense fruit buoyed up. Superb. If you’re a Grenache hound like me, get some of this. — 3 years ago

Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tasmania Chardonnay 2019

Wow wow and wow, never had such an fantastic Aussie Chardonnay, in a line up with top Burgundy I expect 9 out of 0 people would go wrong (including myself). Light greenish color, what a smell, yes its oaked but just right, classic chardonnays smells but all very elegant, modest, light. In the mouth super elegant, fresh, apple, good accidity, chalky, again wow!! I am a big fan. — 7 months ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2018

Popped and poured. The 2018 Produttori del Barbaresco classico pours a garnet color with a transparent core; slightly orange around the rim. Medium+ viscosity with very light staining of a tears; no signs of sediment. On the nose, a mix of deep black and red fruits and wow…loads of tar. It’s bone dry, high tannin and medium+ acid. High alcohol. This is a tar bomb right now and the structure is absolutely monumental. The first time I drank the 2018 Nebbiolos from Piemonte, I thought they reminded me a lot of the 2010 vintage when it was young. And when I think about Produttori specifically, this bottle really reminds me of the way the 2010 drank around 5 years after vintage. Only time will tell if these follow a similar trajectory…but I suspect, yes. Drink now but expect a pile of tannin for at least the next 5-10 years and they should drink well for at least 20. — 3 years ago

Baracca Colli Orientali Del Friuli Chardonnay

9.5

Italian Sunday with the French part of my family.

Yes this is great stuff. This is a big buttery chardonnay and all about roundness and viscosity with plenty of acidic backbone. I also get a ginger note. Not very mineral but also not flabby. Will improve with further age when the acidic component will integrate further. 95+

Noon Winery

Eclipse Grenache Blend 2013

Popped and poured into a decanter about 90min prior to service. The 2013 Eclipse pours a deep ruby with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with faint staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with red and black brambles, leather, black pepper and other spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and hard to hate on. Yes, it is an enormous wine and yet, somehow balanced at 16%. To this day, the wines from Noon remain elusive. Drink now through 2028. — 2 years ago

Hubert Lamy

En Remilly Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chardonnay

Lamy’s ‘14 a Criot Batard Montrachet is up there as wines of my life so I was very excited to share this bottle with Cerasulo. Started strong with his magic work he does in Saint Aubin. I was anticipating a emotional ride, but the wine evened out and the richness took over the reductive steeliness. Felt out of balance. Delicious, yes! But a walk in heaven. Not so much. — 3 years ago

Daou Vineyards

Pessimist Paso Robles Red Blend

Bold yet smooth. Contradiction? Yes. Lots of vanillar and star anise. Delicious rip red fruits yet not jammy, like one would think. Fun wine to share only with Zin lovers. Pinot drinks won’t understand — 4 years ago
