Castello dei Rampolla

Sammarco Toscana SuperTuscan Blend 1999

Surprisingly youthful & vigorous for this age.
Dried cherries on the nose with some tobacco, turned earth, tomato leaf, a bit of leather & a touch of black tea. Enticing, complex, fresh.
On the palate this showed some energy! The tannins polished, smooth but still with quite a grip, the acidity shining, the fruit slowly fading but still there. Brilliant length and character.

I mean this wine is so money. Smooth, fruity, Italian rusticity in the best way. Unbelievable — a month ago

Served a bit warm today but still really nice Italian white.

Had it with the Kale Salad and I am not the biggest fan of kale and it was amazing. Had two.

Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2023

This chianti totally exceeded my expectations. Plum and dark cherry with slight hints of leather on the nose. The flavors really erupt on the palate, with vibrant acidity amplifying the pomegranate, cherry, and orange citrus flavors. There are hints of earthy cinnamon on the palate as well. Nice finish with orange and bitter cocoa notes. So good, and went well with meatball ricotta pizza. After finishing, I read up on the maker and found that they’re a top notch producer, so maybe I shouldn’t have been so surprised about the quality. They also didn’t make any of their sangiovese-based reserve wines in 2023, so all their sangiovese grapes were used in this. Such a tasty bottle and for only $34. — 8 days ago

Poggio Badiola Sangiovese Blend 2019

This is the type of wine I really enjoy. Earthy, not too dry, not sweet. A little dry, but not to make you pucker, medium tannins, NOT fruit forward (thank god). It tastes like an Italian red wine. Served it with a bolognese-ish pasta. Worked well, very enjoyable. Sangiovese, merlot and petit verdot. — a month ago

Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2020

Really tasty. Full bodied with medium acidity and medium/high tannins. Plums with hints of blueberry are joined by interesting herbal notes of thyme and sage. Also has a nice earthiness that veers into a touch of just-ground coffee beans accompanying the fruit and herbal flavors on the finish. Really good, and went well with meatball, ricotta, and mushroom pizza. — a month ago

@Dave I really enjoyed it. Looking to explore more CC. Didn’t have good experiences in the past with Chianti, but I didn’t know that classico was the subregion to get.

Of the other subregions, there are some really good producers of Chianti Rufina.
