Succession Wines

Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

100% Washington State Cabernet produced with fruit from multiple vineyards. Dark ruby/purple color. Aromas of red and black fruit, savory herbs and a bit of mint and citrus zest. Flavors of red and black cherries, cranberries, black currants, dark chocolate, coffee and baking spices. Hint of rosemary on the medium-plus finish. Medium acidity and ample tannins. Full bodied, rich and pretty complex. Memorial Day 2026. — a month ago

Domaine Bernard Baudry

Le Clos Guillot Chinon Cabernet Franc 2018

Raspberry coulis, blackberry juice, mushroom, violet, minerals and barnyard. Tart, explosive purple fruit, some feral, bramble notes on the structured palate, and a succession of furry, prickly tannins. Finish is smoky and bitter. Really massive and opaque, in its own way, hard to evaluate even on day 2. Expect this could gain .2 or more in score as elements resolve. — 4 years ago

Schloss Gobelsburg

Kamptal Grüner Veltliner 2020

Wow—so much happening here. Explosively fresh & zesty: key lime curd, spa water (cucumber, mint, lemon slices), green melon, barely ripe apricot, white pepper and marzipan on the nose. Equally as expressive on the palate, with a punctuated saline-tinged finish. A screaming value and at least one good thing to come out of 2020.

Attempting to sharpen my blind tasting skills by tasting Gruner, Albariño & Muscadet (evil triplets) in succession.

Luciano Sandrone

Le Vigne Barolo Nebbiolo 2014

Yesterday I had the pleasure of having the 2014 Luciano Sandrone Le Vigne Barolo. This was my 4th in succession starting with the 2011 and they were all very similar in style and very structured.

On the nose is the ever present cherry, raspberry, red currant, clove, licorice, dried roses, some alcohol and dusty soil.

On the palate the nose is confirmed with dried cherries, raspberry, red plum, licorice, mint, herbs, graphite, a little burn of alcohol and newly tilled dry soil.

This wine and the others is medium to full bodied with medium + acidity and high fine chewy tannins that lead to a long fruit filled finish. As I went back through the 2011, 2012, 2013 and now the 2014 it brought back memories of each one and how similar they all were and expressing a distinct sense of place. The weekend is upon us and I wish all well. Enjoy a weekend of wine and happiness. Please be safe and have fun. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Stunning out of the gates. Deep olive and granite on the nose. Black olive and blackberry fruit. Palate is so fresh. Like wow fresh. Terrific fruit and granite but also showing some new wood which will breathe out and be perfect by 9PM for Succession. After a few hours it’s silkier, more finessed and has outstanding length — 3 years ago

Pleasure and precision in a light, refreshing frame. Kumquat, pawpaw, a hint of butterscotch hard candy. Vibrant succession of mineral, tart fruit, and dairy flavors. Creamy, lithe and brilliant with a lingering finish. Stellar winemaking. — 4 years ago

Sandro Fay

Ca' Morei Valtellina Superiore Valgella Nebbiolo 2015

Spring 2020. This was the most straightforward of the three Fay wines that we drank in succession, with a plump, chunky character. Overall, compared to ArPepe the Fay wines were closer aromatically to Piemonte Nebbiolo, but with less tannic structure. — 6 years ago

Château Bel Air-Marquis d'Aligre

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

1996 vintage. An old-fashioned Margaux made by 85 year old Jean-Pierre Boyer (who has no succession by the way). No wood here, only concrete vats Very intriguing wine, evolved colour with orange rim. Nose opens up beautifully with air, reminiscent of crushed strawberries, cedar wood and flowers. Delicate and full of finesse, very much alive. Drinking beautifully now, but given how well it reacts to air exposure this wine can evolve for many years to come. Highly recommended if you want to taste a totally different Bordeaux. Only 12,5% Abv. — 7 years ago

Such a flavorful and complex Friulano. Leave this open at least one hour before consuming—decant recommended with aerator. Just the right age. So many flavors come out at once and across the palette: pear and apricot and citrus in succession. A great buy that stood up to Indian Rogan Josh. — 3 years ago

Domaine de la Mordorée

La Reine des Bois Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2000

Mag,
Needs air even after 20 years. Can’t wait to taste the rest tomorrow👌
145, The Wine Advocate 97 points & review as follows

The flagship wine remains Mordoree's remarkable Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois. The 2000 boasts an inky purple color in addition to a ravishing perfume of wood smoke, creme de cassis, blueberries, plums, figs, and a hint of graphite. Full-bodied, with sweet tannin, a layered richness, staggering ripeness, and a finish that lasts for nearly 50 seconds, this monumental Chateauneuf du Pape continues the unbelievable succession of superstar wines that began in 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020.

We went through a bit a phase with this producer the past couple of weeks. It’s great to try the different cuvées in succession while they remain fresh in your memory. This one is made for the long run with great structure. Lots of black fruit backed by a bit of spice. 80% Grenache and 20% Carignan/Cinsault. — 7 years ago
