Peay Vineyards

Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022

Dark cherry & Prune plum. Comes across as quite big and rich despite just 13.9%. Super juicy and drinkable. Black tea leaves, grippy with a bite, well managed tannins. More of a red meat than a white meat Pinot. Would do well even with a Burger. Not my style (for this it has a little too much fruit) but really well put together! A couple of years in the cellar would make it even better - or drink now. Even better days later! — 5 months ago

Burt Williams' Morning Dew Ranch Pinot Noir 2011

9.4

So Williams Selyem Pinots should be treated is the same fashion as good burgundy, with age. It will always be somewhat sweeter than red burgundy but nonetheless very good.

This shows w/ an array of mid berry fruits accompanied by some darker fruits. Strawberries, cherries, pomegranate, cranberries, raspberries, hint of rhubarb, blackberries and haunting blueberries. Mid berry cola, red licorice, fruit tea, eucalyptus, pine tar notes, pine tree bark, dark, rich soils/earth, dry herbs, mid, dark spice, dry crushed rocks, dry limestone powder, black pepper notes, dry river stone, dry fall leaves, bright florals that are; red, blue, purple with a mix of red & pink roses, late spring waterfall acidity with extreme balance, tension, structure with elegance & smart polish for days and long sets on tree bark/sap & spice.

Still ascending.

Anthill Farms

Demuth Vineyard Pinot Noir 2005

Somm David T
9.1

I keep trying Anthill Farms in hopes of truly appreciating their craft. To this bottling, I’m sadly not there. They make decent Pinot but there are others better at the same price point or less.

2005 shows evolution but is still quite big. I would say it is overly extracted.

The nose shows ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, strawberries, raspberries and some blueberry hues. Soft dry soil, limestone, dry, crushed rocks, light baking spices, red cherry cola, dark, red, blue florals, red roses & liquid violets.

The body is round, ripe and lush; blackberries, dark cherries for days, strawberries, raspberries, pomegranate and blueberry hues. Soft dry soil, dry & fresh herbs, moist clay, limestone, dry, crushed rocks, light baking spices; clove, cinnamon, light nutmeg, vanilla, melted caramel, red & mid berry cola, mid, dark spice, dark, red, blue florals, red roses & liquid violets, nice rainfall acidity, well balanced, big structure-tension, elegant finish that lasts a minute and lands on fruit, herbs and earth.

@Joshua Fisher it all boils down to the kind of Pinots that do or do not fall into a persons wheelhouse.

@Joshua Fisher This one is now roughly 18 years in bottle and drank like it was 6 years in bottle. It was still big; which tells me something about it when it was still young. The fruits still very bold and prominent. I would also add that this was likely picked at somewhat higher brix’s level than I prefer as it was also still on the sweeter side nearly 20 yrs down the road.

Estate Grown Gowan Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

Bigger style Pinot. Robust. Mildly stewed fruit and chocolatey but kept just in check. Hardly identifiable as AV Pinot Noir but very pretty nonetheless. Pair with charcoal grilled lamb chops and yayo. — 6 months ago

L'Ermitage Brut Anderson Valley Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2000

Interesting vintage bubbly. 50/50 Blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Dark golden color. Yeasty aromas of mushroom, burnt caramel and orchard fruit. Flavors of bruised apples and pears, mushrooms, caramel sauce, hazelnut, quince and brioche. Hint of salty lemon zest on the long and drawn out finish. Quite fresh tasting despite its age. Lively bubbles and creamy mousse. Quite complex and well developed. Might be a bit past its prime but still delicious. Thanks for bringing this New Year’s Day bubbly, Ron B! — 6 months ago

Ceritas

Hacienda Secoya Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

Really very good. Probably best wine I’ve had from Ceritas. 12.3%, tastes old school but with slightly more new world flavor characteristics like warm spices and purple berries. Great acid and lingering finish. Very enjoyable and fun to try with the age. — 7 months ago

Slight nod over the Rivers-Marie 2013 Gioia (still very fruit driven) and Failla 2013 Occidental Ridge. The Littorai was the most evolved and Burgundian of the bunch. — 8 months ago
